The Leibniz Institute for Science and Mathematics Education (IPN - Institut für die Pädagogik der Naturwissenschaften und Mathematik) was founded in 1966 and is a member of the Leibniz Association (German website only) since 1997. It is located on the campus of the University of Kiel. Until 2008, the institute had four departments (Educational Science, Biology Education, Chemistry Education and Physics Education). In 2008, the IPN was extended by the Department of Mathematics Education.

The mission of the research institute is the development and promotion of science and mathematics education through research. The IPN's teams of scientists, experts in science and mathematics education, pedagogues, and psychologists work together - their focus is on the fundamental research questions concerning the teaching and learning of sciences and mathematics.

More detailed information about research at the IPN, the institute's history, and its structure can be found on the IPN website.
